Design in the Details: Bookbinding Adaptations & Variations June 9-15, 2024
Wells College Book Arts Center, Aurora, NY
This workshop will cover inventive designs for physical book pages, inspired by historic bindings and ephemera. Learn how to incorporate photos or prints into a book, mount loose material, hinge and fold in oversized pages, and how to create pockets, foldouts, envelopes, closures, volvelles, and more. We’ll bind a series of sample pages into an album structure in the process. Bound and Unbound: Photos, Prints and Enclosures July 1-5, 2024
Maine Media Workshops + College, Rockport, ME
This class will explore multiple ways photographs, prints, or other artwork can be shown in both bound and unbound forms. This workshop covers a variety of bindings while considering the incorporation of photographs or prints, especially the ability to add uninterrupted double-page spreads, as well as a number of enclosures to hold both loose items and bound volumes. The workshop begins with a few simple forms for small editions or self-promotion and continues with hardcover structures and a selection of enclosures. Hope some of you might join in! Exploring Map Folds May 14, 2024, 5-8 ET Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild
How do you bind maps or other large flat paper into smaller books? This workshop will cover ways to approach this situation. We will make a series of map folds and bind them into a simple softcover structure as a useful reference for future work. We will talk about the possibilities and limitations of fitting large paper into smaller books, and discuss a variety of solutions. Though the models will be softcover these are easily incorporated into hardcover books. While our focus will be on maps, these structures and methods apply to any larger paper items. Participants should have solid basic bookbinding skills to get the most out of the workshop. Note: Much of this material is also covered in the instructor’s longer workshop Atlas: A Book of Maps. Toroidal (Circular) Accordion May 15, 2024, 5-8 CT Minnesota Center for Book Arts
A circle? A donut? A torus! Whatever you think of when you see this accordion, the shape has lots of fun possibilities for content, which we will discuss. When open, it’s donut-shaped, when folded up it’s a wedge—like a piece of pie without the tip. We’ll draw out the form, cut and fold, discuss variations and make a simple wrapper. Our focus will be on making a model or two that participants can use as reference for making more finished ones after the workshop. We will also look at the work of Ken Leslie, the artist from whom the instructor learned this form. Bring some drawing tools for adding basic content if desired.
