Stephanie has offered workshops online via Zoom through a variety of organizations: the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Maine Media Workshops & College, AVA Gallery & Art Center, Creative Arts Workshop, the Morgan Conservatory, Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, San Diego Book Arts, Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, and Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Please get in touch if you are interested in having her teach for your group, either virtually or in person. For an idea of workshop offerings, see the photographs of workshop models posted below. Or get in touch to discuss options designed for your group.
Generally the online workshops are recorded by the host institution and available for a period of time after the live session. Handouts are provided for all workshops, both virtual and in-person.
I want to express my appreciation with grateful thanks, not only for my own teachers, but for the historic bookmakers from many cultures, whose generous sharing of their knowledge and innovations whether through workshops or publications, has informed my own artwork and my teaching.

Magical Movable Paper
Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 5-8 Eastern Time (Note the time zone)
with the Jaffe Center for Book Arts
Fold! Flex! Spin! We’ll make a small collection of movable paper devices in this workshop, all ready for your creative content. These include a flexagon, a magic wallet, and a spinner (also known as a thaumatrope). These devices are simple to make, but seem complex when activated. Our focus will be on making basic models with commonly available materials that can later be adapted for use with more sophisticated papers and personalized messages. All of these structures are flat and thus easily sent through the mail. Paper will need to be cut to size prior to the workshop, with instructions on how to do this sent to participants ahead of class. Handouts are provided to help create more items after the workshop.

The Stenciled Image
Wednesday, October 11, 2023, 5-8 Central Time (Note the time zone)
with Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Stenciled artwork generally breaks down an image into its most essential parts. Think of graffiti artists whose spray-painted graphics use stencils for making quick, repeatable images. In this workshop we will cover a basic method of creating and using stencils to make multiple copies on paper. Our focus will be on learning the general mechanics of stenciling. The instructor will focus on the use of acrylic ink, but demos will cover other mediums, though no spray painting. Additionally, the use of jigs to get good registration both of the image and its placement on the paper will be addressed. This one-session workshop will provide a good basis for further experimentation afterward. Please note: Participants can use whatever appropriate medium they have on hand (see supply list) for the class if they prefer not to purchase new supplies. Reach out if questions about materials.

The Road Book
Saturday, November 4, 2023, 1-5 pm Central Time (Note the time zone)
with Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Registration for this class opens October 7 on the MCBA website.
This workshop covers an historical book structure useful for maps, prints, or other material, inspired by a book the instructor worked on as a book conservator. The Road Book (the title of this 1904 New England road atlas) is a pamphlet bound single-signature structure, but the configuration and attachment of the pages allows for clear double-page spreads with no thread or obstruction in the gutter. A simple (and perhaps obvious) idea once learned, it’s a useful structure. We will talk about a few adaptations, materials, and share our ideas for its use. Our model will be softcover, but easily adapted to a hardcover version. Participants should have solid basic bookbinding skills to get the most out of the workshop. The model and handout provided will serve as reference for making future books.
Tunnel Books
Wednesday, November 8, 2023, 5-8 Eastern Time (Note the time zone)
with the Jaffe Center for Book Arts
Tunnel books are like small theatres, similar to the shoebox dioramas children make in school. We will use our own illustrations or images cut from magazines or other source material in making our models. If you come with an idea or simple sketch for a small 3-dimensional world you want to create, you’ll be well prepared to make the most from this workshop. Our tunnel books will be 4” high x 6” wide, about the size of a postcard. We will discuss variations of the form and ways to incorporate the theatre into a folder or case. The model we make will be a solid basis for a creating a final finished book after the workshop or for use as reference for future work. Instructions for pre-cutting paper will be sent prior to the workshop.

Journal for a New Year
Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 5-8 Central Time (Note the time zone)
with Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Registration for this class opens October 7 on the MCBA website.
This adaptable two-signature softcover journal can be used for notes and thoughts during a new year, a new month, or a new season. Each participant will choose what to add to their book: calendar pages, plain or gridded paper for notes or sketches, a place for contacts. The journal will be bound with two sections and has some pockets, both side and top-loading. Along with making our journals, we will cover ideas and resources for keeping one. Access to a printer or copy shop is needed to print out some of the optional materials provided, such as calendar and contact pages, should you wish to add them. These PDF files of calendar pages and instructions for printing them will be sent prior to the workshop. Please note that the structure of this journal has some thickness limitations, so it wouldn't be large enough for daily calendar pages. If you run out of space, you can make more, as the calendar’s days are numbered by hand. The binding is adaptable to other kinds of content and uses. Solid basic bookbinding skills are needed for this workshop.
